There are a total of 36 windows throughout the Lighthouse. Out of these 36 windows, the 4 in the gym area, and 2 in the kitchen area, are still in good shape having been replaced more frequently than the others. However, the other 30 windows are in bad condition and replacing them could help the lighthouse cool down in the summer and stay hotter in the winter. Some of the windows in the worst condition were made only from a thin layer of Plexiglas, which is not effective enough for the Lighthouse.
The windows that need to be replaced all measured about 56” X 76”. Because these windows are so big, it will be very costly to replace all 30 windows. Although it is difficult to find the exact price of windows of this size, standard-size, double-hung, double-pane (energy efficient), vinyl windows would usually cost around $600. The windows at the lighthouse are larger than standard size windows, therefore the window cost could range from $750 to $1000 per window, including installation. With this estimate, replacing all 30 windows could range between $22,500 and $30,000. This is a very rough estimate, but until the design team can contact a contractor, it is the best estimate that can be made at the moment.
Curtains
A cheaper short term solution may be curtains. Curtains would certainly be much more affordable than replacing every window, but would not be an acceptable solution long term. There were already curtains on 5 of the 36 windows, so 31 curtains would be needed. The price of curtains could range from about $30 to $60 depending on the quality, but a good estimate would be $40 per curtain. For this price, it would cost roughly $1,240 to put curtains on 31 windows. This price is much more affordable than replacing 30 windows, so it would be a good quick fix to the problem.
